We are reading many books in Te Reo Maori. Some are very basic and some are kind of complicated too. We are just taking small steps with a focus of understanding what the stories are really about through using a variety of reading processing and reading comprehension strategies. These strategies include the following:

Reading Processing Strategies (are the “in-the-head” ways in which readers make use of the sources of information in the text to decode words)

  1. attending and searching (looking for particular text features or information)
  2. predicting what will be in the text (for example, words, text features, or content)
  3. cross-checking to confirm that the reading makes sense and fits, and
  4. self-correcting by searching for more information when an error is detected

What does decoding mean? Decoding refers to the process of translating a printed word into a sound

Reading Comprehension Strategies (making sense of what is read)

  1. making connections between texts and their prior knowledge;
  2. forming and testing hypotheses about texts;
  3. asking questions about texts;
  4. creating mental images or visualising;
  5. inferring meaning from texts;
  6. identifying the writer’s purpose and point of view;
  7. identifying the main idea or theme in a text;
  8. summarising the information or events in texts;
  9. analysing and synthesising ideas, information, structures, and features in texts;
  10. evaluating ideas and information.
